How to Take Care of a Vehicle that is not Driven Often

Storing a vehicle long term can be rough on your car, especially in Southern California weather. While some of us have one car for everyday use, others may have vehicles for fun or special occasions. Vehicles that need to be stored for long periods of time require maintenance, to prevent damage that can occur when a vehicle is not driven often.

Here are some simple ways to keep your stored vehicles looking and running great.

Keep Your Car Covered and in a Garage, If Possible

Protect your car’s paint from dirt and moisture by buying a durable cover. Constant sunlight wreaks havoc on paintjobs. Whenever possible, it is also good to keep a vehicle garaged so it does not have to endure changes in the weather and temperature. If neither are feasible, find a shaded spot beneath a tree that doesn’t shed seeds or attract birds.

Check and Inflate your Tires

Be sure to check the air in your tires and inflate them as needed. Temperature can affect the pressure in your tires over time. Flat tires that sit too long can develop cracks that require a tire to be replaced.

Fill up your Tank and Add Fluids

Make sure you have a full tank of gas if you plan on storing your car for an extended period. By keeping the gas tank full, you can help prevent moisture buildup. A fuel stabilizer can also be added to protect your car’s fuel lines. It is also important to top off the fluids in your car, including engine coolant, brake fluid, windshield wiper fluid, power steering fluid, etc.

Repair any Damage from Storage

Even when you are diligent about maintenance, stored cars can become damaged. Paint may wear and the overall look of your car may not be as fresh. Consider bringing your stored vehicle to a body shop for repairs. This will allow you to continue storing your car while also keeping it in good shape. For any vehicle repairs, bring your vehicle to a Spectrum Collision body shop for repairs in Irvine, CA, near Costa Mesa, CA.
