What Do the Symbols on Your Dashboard Mean?

A Closeup of a Modern Car Interior Dashboard

As you drive down the road, it’s likely that you will eventually see one of the many dashboard symbols located in your vehicle. Each one has a different meaning. To help you understand why they are important, we will look at the top five warning lights and what each means.

If one of these symbols on your vehicle lit up after a collision, it’s best to come on down and visit us at Spectrum Collision. Contact us today in Southern California.

Oil Pressure Light

When the oil pressure light alerts you, it means that something isn’t right with the oil pressure system. It could be that the oil level is low or the pump stopped working as it should. Either way, you want to have it addressed right away to avoid engine damage.

Engine Temperature Warning

If you see this symbol, it means that the engine is too hot. Most of the time, it is related to the coolant levels in your system. Don’t ignore this problem either, or you could require a new engine, which is quite costly.

Tire Pressure Warning Light

The TPMS symbol indicates that one or more of your tires doesn’t have the correct amount of pressure. You should stop driving and immediately check the pressure. Driving on under- or over-inflated tires creates a massive safety concern.

Anti-lock Brake Warning Light

The ABS warning light tells you that something isn’t right with the system. Because the anti-lock brakes help to keep you safe, you can’t ignore this fault. If the light comes on briefly and immediately turns off, it was only the system doing a self-check and no further action is required.

Check Engine Light

This light may come on for a vast number of reasons. It could indicate a serious concern, so you don’t want to drive with it on. The first step is to make sure your gas cap is on correctly. If the light begins to flash, don’t drive another mile. Ignoring it could lead to engine damage.
